Don’t get it twisted, a lot of people may think that a job with the Royal Air Force means getting your Tom Cruise on and flying about at supersonic speeds in a war zone Top Gun style, but that’s not all they’re about.

With over 50 different career options available in the RAF, we talk to 35 year old Solomon Mugondi who is an aircraft technician with the force about career opportunities, ethnic diversity and some of the more exotic locations he’s been assigned to… Interview by Kippa Brand

Why did you join the RAF?
I joined the RAF because at the time I didn’t like the direction I saw my life heading in. I was in a well paid job working for a marketing company. However, the idea of a 9-5 working in an office for X number of years just lost its appeal for me. I was willing at that time to take a bit of a pay cut for the experience and training I have subsequently achieved.

Why is it a good place to work?
From day one, you have the opportunity to be the best you can be. For me that is a big deal. I recall winning ‘Best Recruit’ at the end of my time at Recruits Training School, RAF Halton – I felt very proud. For people who like competition, working as part of a team and of course recognition for what they achieve. This is a good place.

What training and support does the RAF provide?
Each one of these careers provided by the RAF requires personnel to be trained and highly motivated. Entry requirements for the jobs range from zero GCSEs to professional qualifications such as doctors and lawyers. Once you are in, the training and opportunities for development are ongoing. It has to be on going because we have to be ready to play our part, sometimes at a moment’s notice. If you like your sports, there are plenty of opportunities to excel in this side of your RAF life. We have serving personnel who are currently training to represent Great Britain in the 2012 Olympics.

What sort of career development opportunities are there?
Plenty. From my personal experience, I began my career as an avionics technician. That experience gave me the opportunity to learn new skills as an engineer. Acquire civilian recognised qualifications through training with the RAF, and use those learned skills in different locations around the world. Now, as part of the Ethnic Minority Recruiting Team (EMRT), I have an incredible opportunity to learn and develop a new set of skills.

What has been the most rewarding thing for you for being part of the RAF?
What I do now with the EMRT. So the diversity and being able to give something back if that makes any sense. When I first joined I joined for my own purpose and for my own sake, just to get something out of it in that respect, but since I’ve grown I’ve learned though the Air Force what other opportunities are available and that makes it possible to go into other schools and let other kids know what’s available and to help them make decisions.

Has the RAF taken you to ay exotic locations you wouldn’t have otherwise had the chance to go to?
Yeah certainly, first detachment for example was Bulgaria and I’d have never considered going there, but I ended up there for about three weeks. I’ve been to Romania and to Oman twice. It’s just ranged from really nice luxurious locations to places where I’ve lived in tents in the desert for a month. I’ve also toured different parts of the States and Turkey. I think that’s purely because of the nature of my job, what we call a front line squadron, so it’s a case of going wherever the aircraft go.

So then what would you say is the most memorable of those places?
I mean it’s a long list, I’d love to be able to go there myself!
Well Petra in Jordan for me was amazing. Though it’s a case of work hard, play hard. We had the opportunity to get some down time off so we decided to head off. It was a long bus trip but we got the bus from base camp to Petra and we arrived and we were informed, that that’s where they filmed a lot of scenes for the Indian Jones movie, and we had the King of Jordan come and visit just to say thanks for what we’ve been doing, which was awesome.

Do you get a lot of free time? What do you do in your free time away from the RAF?
Yeah, it’s not all about work, work, work. I love playing football, tennis, all sorts of sports, rock climbing and things like that. Every station of a unit gives you the opportunity to go out and do sports, training and things like that. It’s so we can develop people as a whole, it’s not all about just working.
I can imagine each unit having its own football team and you can all just playoff against each other!
Yeah we do stuff like that! We have competitions between different services, even the armed forces and air forces get training to go to the Olympics if they’re good enough, so it ranges for people who just want to go along and have a muck about to want to excel and play their sports at the highest possible level, the opportunities are there but the only limit is people’s mindset.

What about those people who are put off the RAF cos they think they’ll be flying and fighting? Is there anything for them to do in the Force?
Yeah definitely, part of what we do is to try to make people aware of the different opportunities. When I first joined, I didn’t really know a great deal about the armed forces or the air force, I thought what I saw on the news is what I would get, but there is over 50 different jobs you can do. What I advise everyone to do is do your research and make sure it’s what you want to do. Personally I don’t like the idea of being front line so I did my research I discovered there’s loads of jobs. There’s police, there’s fire-fighters, administration, doctors, dentists, lawyers, just all sorts. I mean my job is to make people aware of that. Bare in mind though there is always a possibility that you’ll be put in a situation where you might have to use front line tactics, it comes with the territory, though I’ve been fortunate that I haven’t been put into that situation. I’m a technician by trade which means I work on 60 aircraft, they go out to do whatever they have to, which is usually 100 miles away, and when they get back our job is to fix them, so we’re quite far away from there the conflict is.

How have you developed as a person through the RAF?
Yeah, certainly, in lots of ways. I’ve certainly realized skills and abilities which I didn’t know I had. The idea of working on aircraft really intimidated me at first but excited me before I joined. Yeah, it’s a big responsibility straight off the top of your head, to think you’re going to actually working on an aircraft.

What’s the most nerve-wracking thing you’ve done?
Surprisngly it’s giving presentations to over 100 people; public speaking terrifies me, but I am overcoming that fear.

Really? Scarier than flying?
[laughs] I think somebody said public speaking is something people are more afraid of then death. But seriously, effective public speaking alone is a good skill to have in any job; I have discovered something within myself that I would like to do in the future after completing my career in the RAF. If someone 10 years ago had said to me that I would be doing a satellite TV interview about my life in the RAF, I would have thought they were crazy. You never know where life is going to take you.

Faith Child joins the Gospel Showcase duo this Sunday 9am - 11 on BANG 103.6FM

With over 10 years of experience in the industry and accolades involving the MOBO Awards, Channel AKA smash hits, and touring with American artists, any normal artist would gracefully accept the title of ‘veteran’…However we aren’t talking about any artist here, we are talking about ‘Faith Child’.

Faith Child is the mastermind behind ‘IllumiNATION’, the fastest selling debut album in UK Gospel (2009). His debut album which features MOBO award winners Victizzle and Jahaziel, UMA award winner Guvna B, the highly rated American musician Terrell King, in addition to the legendary Hillsongs, flew off the shelves in the week it was released, and this is a highlight to a fantastic year which included him opening for Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin and Marvin Sapp.

Humbly accepting the fruits of his labour are clearly exceptional, Faith Child points to Romans 10:17. ‘Faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of God’. Faith Child, who’s talented artistry can only be described as God given uses the word of God to positively inspire and empower all who listen. His ministry is more pointed towards the youth of today, saved and unsaved, bringing hope and an alternative to life which is Christ.

One could easily mistake Faith Child for just another rapper but in fact this is quite the contrary. A devout member of the RCCG Church in Croydon, Faith is more than a rapper…he is a born performer. A skilful drummer, a versatile MC as well as having a humorous disposition ensure his music is creative and innovative. Not to mention his skills in other areas of performing arts which include drama, dance and mime. His performing arts group ‘Trans4maz’ are a testament to this.

Further reiterating that his selfless aim is to spread love andpeace along with the word of God, he collaborates and shares his talents with many people. His dedicated mission has resulted in massive tours with the likes of Cross Movements singer, songwriter and producer J.R. He has also been on the road and shared stages with Helen Baylor, The Ambassador, Lecrae, Eternal Excellence, Guvna B, Jahaziel, Simply Andy, Four Kornerz and more. Historic venues such as the Excel Exhibition Centre, Fairfield Halls, Hackney Empire and Catford Broadway theatre have experienced such tours and the Redemption Camp in Nigeria with a capacity of over 4 million.

With his stage presence proven, packing out the famous ULU venue for his album launch and producing an amazing show for fans, it would be understandable if he wasn’t as prolific recording wise. Surprisingly he is just as inspirational. He appeared on 2007 MOBO award winners G Force’s album ‘Destroy and Rebuild’. He also featured on the first Christian garage music video to hit mainstream television ‘Bibles Bibles’. This song was a ‘Channel AKA’ smash hit.

Raised in the church, his faith as a child stood out and propelled him above his peers. At only 20 years of age he has shown that faith as small as a mustard seed can see you achieve that which God has birthed within you.

Unlike other major labels in the D&B scene, Metalheadz hasn’t hosted a regular rave in London (or rather, anywhere else!) since the Bluenote days. After hosting a night at the end of 2009, Goldie and the crew are back this Saturday 13th March and with a stinking line-up too! Accompanying the standard exceptional Metalheadz crew; Goldie, Bailey, Ed Rush and S.P.Y will be Mr. Andy C fresh from winning Best DJ at this year’s National Drum & Bass Awards…with a line-up as serious as this, this is a night you don’t want to miss!

And BANG don’t want you to miss out either! So we’ve got two tickets for Metalheadz to give away on this Friday 12th March Drum & Bass Show….probably your last chance to get into what’s going to be a very very loud and heavy night, as tickets are selling out!

Joining Micky Mafia and Lady V this Friday will also be Metalheadz representative and Brazilian native,
DJ S.P.Y. Known in the Industry for providing such intricate but crisp beats and having worked with several labels and artists all over the world – he’ll have lots to talk about! In addition, he’ll be dropping a live mix in the studio with the BANG D&B crew, giving you flavours of what to expect on Saturday night.

Don’t miss the Comedy Show this Friday at when Travis Jay will be talking to Angie Le Mar in a special interview and joined by Miss London

Angie Le Mar

Sharp, funny and above all stylish, Angie Le Mar is one of Britain’s top comediennes. Whether on TV, Radio or in her dynamic live shows which regularly sell out 1,000-seater theatres, Angie is a proven hit with male and female, international audiences and is equally at home with quick-fire comedy, acutely observed character sketches and solid acting performance.

Angie founded Straight to Audience Productions to draw not just on her unsurpassed reputation as a performer and writer but also on her acknowledged expertise in direction, production and marketing, to serve the growing international market for vibrant, top quality black entertainment. This market is far wider then just the black community itself, but one the mainstream media has been unable to tap into…until now.

Straight to Audience was launched in May 2001 with the video release of Angie Le Mar the Movie making her live stand up available to eager fans for the first time. The success of the video allowed Angie to develop her work as a writer, director and producer of shows with other artists including, Will the Real Wayne Rollins Please Stand Up, Big Sister which used the Big Brother format as a vehicle to showcase up-and-coming young comics, and 26 episodes of Sharp Cuts, a radio comedy/drama which Angie wrote and starred in for Choice FM.

The success of Sharp Cuts led to the development of The Brothers, a radio drama which attracted 60,000 new listeners to the show and convinced Angie that there was a market for a live production.

The theatrical version of The Brothers sold out its first run at The Hackney Empires Bullion Room and returned by popular demand to the Theatre’s 1200-seater Main Space where it became the theatre’s fastest selling show in ten years, with extra nights having to be added to meet the demand.

Angie’s wide ranging career achievements - from being the first British performer to storm the legendary Harlem Apollo to making history in London’s West End with the first ever sell out show by a black comedienne - not only enable her to deliver top quality performance and production values on stage, screen and the airwaves, but also to attract a large and loyal fan base along with greatly increased audiences wherever her work appears.

The Angie Le Mar Show on Choice FM, Britain’s leading urban talk and music station had the weekend morning slot and has attracted guests ranging from Stevie Wonder, Danny Glover and John Singleton to India Irie and Maya Angelou.

Angie’s TV work includes memorable appearances on top-rated shows such as BBC’s Grumpy Old Women, Must Try Harder, The Real McCoy, and her starring role in four successful series of Get Up Stand Up (Channel Four). BBC 4 the Front room.

Angie was also the only broadcaster to get an exclusive interview by Hollywood legend Whoopi Goldberg; and her coverage of Whoopi’s autobiography helped make it a UK best-seller.

In the theatre, Angie’s award winning stand up comedy has been celebrated with two star-studded Audiences With… events. While she is equally well known as the writer, director and star of the ground breaking Funny Black Women on the Edge - the unique sketch show which broke box office records at the Edinburgh Festival, had two sell out runs at Theatre Royal Stratford East, will return by popular demand for one final celebration at the newly refurbished Hackney Empire for International Women’s Month in Spring 2007.

Angie has also played in the West End with The Vagina Monologues as well as her one woman show.

Other Angie Le Mar productions at The Hackney Empire include Do You Know Where Your Daughter Is? This opened in August 2006. The show features a cast of teenage actors in a hard-hitting and very topical drama focusing on the tensions of mother daughter relationships and the often devastating consequences of peer pressure and street violence.

Forty - written, directed by and starring Angie - is the story of five women who discover that what was intended to be a celebration of old school ties turns into a night of score settling, personal revelation and ultimately forgiveness.

Angie Le Mar is Britain’s First Lady of Black Comedy and as such has won numerous awards, including several Black Entertainment Comedy Awards (BECA’s) for Best Stand up Female and twice for Most Original Material, The Men and Women of Merit award and the prestigious EFBWO - European Federation of Black Women in Business. BECA Award comedy Drama for The Brothers. Women of Excellence International Award Jan 007.

Voted100 Great Black Britons. Top 50 Black Powerful Women, New Nation Newspaper. Pride Magazine and Top 50 UK Talent to look out for.

Miss London

If you havent heard about her already, its only a matter of time before youll bear witness to the side-splitting talents of comedienne, Miss London.
Currently making huge waves on the comedy circuit and having already built up an enviable celebrity fan base, this 20-year-old comic, touted as the female voice of UK comedy, is definitely one to watch.
Miss London currently holds the Funny woman of the year title and won a BEFFTA for best female comedienne this year.

New York City, “The Mecca of Hip Hop,” is known for its influence on Hip Hop culture – record labels, radio stations, clubs, and mixtape spots are as common as supermarkets and laundromats. But to be an influential DJ in New York City, it takes a certain type of “tastemaker”: one who can find balance between the radio, the clubs, and the streets, and not sleeping until you dominate the scene. It takes, well, a superstar. And for James “Superstar Jay” Hamilton, regardless of what role he might play (top Mixtape DJ, “A&R to the streets,” Club & Radio DJ), his influence on the industry is unquestioned, and his presence will be at the top of the NYC Hip Hop scene for many years to come.

Jay was inspired from a young age to make an impact on the entertainment world, and found his inspiration growing up in Jamaica, Queens. The neighborhood is infamous for birthing countless talents in both the Hip Hop world (Run DMC, A Tribe Called Quest, 50 Cent, G-Unit, Ja Rule, Lost Boyz) and the NBA (Lamar Odom, Rafer “Skip To My Lou” Alston). At the age of 12, he was already learning from some of the top Hip Hop DJs, including the likes of DJ Clue, DJ Kid Capri, and DJ Ron G. But he was also cultivating his skills on the basketball court, and he earned himself a full sports scholarship to Buffalo State College in upstate New York. While at Buffalo State, he decided to turn his full attention to DJ’ing, and found success with his radio show “Midnight Run Mixtape” on WBNY 91.3FM. Jay soon became one of the top radio & club DJs in Western New York, dominating the scene in cities like Buffalo & Rochester. Jay took that momentum back to New York City to become the “Superstar” he is today…and he hasn’t looked back since!

Superstar Jay’s ability to put out consistent quality product is unmatched, and the industry was quick to take notice. In 2006, he was nominated five times (a record) at the Justo’s Mixtape Awards, and took home the coveted “Rookie Of The Year” award in 2006. Past winners of the award include 106 & Park’s DJ L and DJ Big Mike, and countless other top urban DJs have made their mark after winning a “Justo,” including DJ Clue, DJ Kay Slay, DJ Drama, and DJ Whoo Kid. Later that year, Superstar Jay was recognized by MTV as the “Breakthrough DJ of the Year” for his constant pressure on the music industry. His appearances on MTV’s “Direct Effect,” BET’s “Rap City,” and New York City’s Power 105.1FM only solidify his position as “a legend in the making” (source: SOHH).

The Superstar Jay “cosign” in considered by many to be a gateway to the streets of New York City, and it shows in his web presence on Google (140,000+ hits) and mixtape destination DatPiff (180 mixtapes, 500,000+ listens, 100,000+ downloads). Jay has released upwards of 1000 mixtapes in his career, and sold an estimated 100,000 “in the streets.” He has worked with countless top Hip Hop acts coming out of New York City, including the likes of the entire G-Unit team (50 Cent, Tony Yayo, & Lloyd Banks), Busta Rhymes,Maino, Jim Jones, Prodigy (of Mobb Deep), Stack Bundles, and Ali Vegas. Jay is also no stranger to controversy, as he was the DJ behind Remy Ma’s “Shesus Khryst” during her rift with Fat Joe, as well as Gillie Da Kid’s “The Truth Hurts” where he addressed ghostwriting for Lil’ Wayne. But Jay also takes pride in breaking talented artists, and has helped take artists like Roccett, Sha Stimuli, Fred Da Godson, Lexx 9Eleven, Clap Cognac and Storm P to the next level.

Superstar Jay is a prominent member of Da Union DJs alongside DJs Self, Norie, Will, Big Kap, and more. He is also a member of the Justo’s Mixtape Awards-winning Noize Mob DJs team, along with DJs such as Chuck T, Lazy K, and Brucie B. NBA champion and fellow Jamaica, Queens representative Lamar Odom recognized Jay’s power moves and made him the flagship DJ for Odom’s music imprint Rich Soil Records. You can now hear Jay every Friday night at 9PM in London UK (4PM EST/1PM PST) on Bang Radio 103.6FM.

Join Dr. Psycho this Wednesday on the Breakfast Surgery as he talks live to Donaeo, 7am till 10am on BANG 103.6FM

Donae’o aka Ian Greenidge was always destined to make a career out of music after growing up in a house where melodies were a major force. His mother was a singer and as a youngster growing up in north west London it was common place for her to be heard belting out tunes in the house. A young Donae’o was also a regular companion when she was out performing and loved soaking up the atmosphere. In fact you could say this is where he felt most at home.

His was never a story of numerous talents shows and performing in school plays, but by the time he was in his mid teens he had already attracted a management outfit, and released a single Falling’. During his teens Donae’o (which means ‘Gift from God’) would release and re-release a few singles, most notably Falling and Bounce under various management outfits. Both singles made an impact on the underground, with Bounce winning an award for Best Live P.A at the People’ Choice Awards in 2003. All of this set the foundations for Donae’o’s future success. ‘Both of these songs kick-started my career,’ says the now 25-year-old. In his late teens and early 20’s he released a few more underground singles, but was mainly out of the spotlight as he focused on working on a plan to orchestrate the next stage of his career.

The plan? To take control of his career himself, minus any management. He had penned a tune called Devil In A Blue Dress, and this was the one he felt could really turn things around, and he was right.

Don’t miss Nu Brand Flexx on this weeks Tuesday Top-Up with DJ Policy 7-9pm on BANG 103.6FM

Boya and Saskilla together played their part in the development of underground garage music into what we know today as grime. Both burst onto the scene in a big way in 2002 by featuring on the critically acclaimed Lord of The Decks 2 DVD. Where their unique style and witty lyrics caught the ears of a grime nation which quickly cemented them as major contenders in the game. After undergoing some serious ground work within the industry by liaising with several big wigs in the game and both undertaking a work experience spell with SONY BMG records, the pair joined New Brand Flex in the summer of 2004 along with fellow mic controller: Likle-P and subsequently began to carve a bigger niche for themselves in this business we call music.

Performing on stage at near enough every major outdoor festival throughout the year, Luton Carnival, Anti Racist Festival as well Victoria Park Festival, which was an invite from Lady Sovereign, were all blessed with the groups vocals. More and more tracks soon began to be recorded with collaborations all through out the grime scene and beyond. The group have worked with such artists as Lethal B, Wiley, Lady Sovereign, Essentials, FLIRTA D and SLK just to name a few. More lyrics were written and more radio sets were being attended and a very substantial fanbase soon began to emerge from the hours that were put into development. Tracks are distributed through an independent sales team or via the world wide web. Striver joined the camp in 2003 and was the mastermind behind rising star Chanels first hit single, ‘Dreamin’ which featured our very own Saskilla and the ever ostentatious Mr WONG. The track reached 8 in the Channel U Charts. Striver also produced the ‘G..sh’ by Da Hour track, which somewhat speaks for itself. Likle-P and Saskilla later released ‘Wussy Phat’l, a creative, comical jibe at that common adversary we have all come to know as HATERS!. The video received over 88,000 views on the RWG-MAG website. With very strong upcoming releases, videos and a short film looming the air, the boys are definitely moving from strength to strength. With a very positive attitude toward their music and a creative infectious styles, we look set to be struck with many more hits!
