Ralf GUM is one of the highest respected figures in the house music scene for the distinctive qualities in his exceptional productions and DJ-sets. Since Ralf’s DJ career started in 1990 he stayed true to his passion for cool and diverse house music. Harmony & Soul & Groove – just some aspects of Ralf’s typical sound. With a feeling for the vibe, he convincingly played at more than 350 German and international spots, including gigs all over Europe, Asia, the Middle East, South America and the United States. In autumn 2008 Ralf toured South Africa for the first time with great response and was the first German house DJ who was booked in Botswana. 2009 followed 2 large South Africa tours and Ralf was invited to conduct various work shops at the South African Music conference.

Ralf GUM’s producing music since 1993 and worked with notable artists as Inaya Day, Michael Procter, Beady Belle, Wunmi, Concha Buika or the fascinating Monique Bingham. He released on and remixed for top labels like Mn2S, Papa, Peppermint Jam, Tommy Boy, Compose, Sole Music, Look At You or Defected and his first remix for their classic record ‘Love is what you need (Look ahead)’ by King unique instantly scored the 1 position on Traxsource’s download charts in March 2009. Ralf has released various well-known songs, among them the soulful hit of 2008 “Kissing Strangers” (GOGO Music) featuring Monique Bingham, which was a bestseller in its genre in 2008. Thus it got #1 in the “Top 100 Singles 2008” and the “biggest house track 2008” in the chart of the ultra-credible Traxsource download-shop. In 2009 Ralf’s works made it 3 times to the top spot at Traxsource and he claimed various more Top 10 positions. But Ralf’s success of course isn’t limited to the Traxsource charts. In 2009 he was amongst the 10 best selling house-songs of the year on the Japanese download-site Wasabeat with his single “Little W. 12th st.”, had various #1 download-chart positions on Clickgroove and made it to the Top 10 of various other sites. Further hits of Ralf include “All This Love For You” (GOGO Music) featuring Diamondancer, “Ponle Tumbao” (Tommy Boy / Flamingo Discos / Milk & Sugar), “Helena Brown - Canção Dourada” (Peppermint Jam) or „Ralf GUM feat. Concha Buika – Nobody can touch me” (GOGO Music). Ralf GUM’s productions made it to a worldwide renown trademark in the house scene and UK’S TTR magazine called Ralf “one of Germany’s finest” in 2005.

But Ralf not only convinces as a producer - first of all his DJ-sets have helped him building up his reputation as an upfront tastemaker. During his career he had various residencies in South-Germany including the “Airport” (Wuerzburg /Germany), which was the living-room for his interpretation of house for more than 11 years. During more than a decade he captured the crowd with his sessions every Friday night and played alongside with worlds-top artists like DJ Gregory, Martin Solveig, Lenny Fontana or DJ Pippi, to name just a few. End of 2006 Ralf started his residency at Climax in Stuttgart (Germany), where he can be found regularly. From 2002 till 2007 Ralf hosted a bi-weekly event at “Studio-Lounge” (Wuerzburg, Germany) which was called “the deepest and most soulful party of Germany” by the Subculture Magazine. Some other club-highlights Ralf DJ-ed at include: Southport Weekender (UK), 360 (Dubai, UAE), “El Devino” (Ibiza, Spain), “Mo’Vibes” Festival (Munich, Germany), “Amika” (Miami, USA), “The Room” (Tokyo, Japan), “ECU / Echoes” (Rimini, Italy), “Garito Café” (Palma de Mallorca, Spain), “Passage” (Vienna, Austria), “Garten Club @ Volksgarten” (Vienna, Austria), “Capitol Music Café” (Johannesburg, South Africa), “Alpha” (Dubai), Fruity Antics (Bristol, UK), “Days like this” (Birmingham, UK), “Barokko” (Budapest, Hungary) “Marula Cafe” (Madrid, Spain), “Ministry of Sound Radio” (London, UK), “Muak @ Herbal” (London, UK), “Soulstice” (Oslo, Norway), “Mica Club” (Lausanne, Switzerland) “Oxa” (Zürich, Switzerland), “Atlantis” (Basel, Switzerland), “Stereo Sushi” (Antwerp, Belgium), “Mansion” (Amsterdam, Netherlands), “GURU Club” (Tibisli, Georgia), “Pacha” (Palma de Mallorca, Spain), “Rave on Snow” (Saalbach, Austria), “Nature One” (Germany), “Republic Cafe” (Salzburg, Austria), “Cocoon” (Frankfurt, Germany).

Ralf GUM embarked on the development of his own record label GOGO Music in 2001. With strong ambitions and his love for house music being the driving force, GOGO Music has become Germany’s, if not one of world’s most reputable house music labels. Late 2005 GOGO Music was called “one of the hottest imprints around” by UK’s leading magazine “Blues & Soul” and Germany’s “Subculture” wrote that “GOGO Music is the prime German house label”. In April 2009 Chicago’s best house music publication “5 Magazine” wrote, that “GOGO Music has become synonymous with the best Deep House produced in Europe” and 2010 UK’s magazine SoulM8 certified that “GOGO Music is “one of Germany’s best independent labels”. With his label-work Ralf has been pivotal for the international breakthrough of artists like Raw Artistic Soul or Black Coffee. In 2003 Ralf initiated the GOGO Music radio-show. Besides his sets the weekly show features Benny Pecoraio and from time to time selected guest-DJs. To date the show is broadcasted by more than 30 stations around the globe.

Next to his Ralf GUM productions, he started two further projects. “SUGAR BEAT”, is a collaboration with drummer Steffen Meder which developed out of their unique live performance: “Jazzy Live Drums & Uplifting Spinning”. With SUGAR BEAT’s irresistable sound of fusion a new broken beat style is being created. After their sweet remixes on GOGO Music, in 2006 the first own productions have been released on the “GOGO Music Spring Collection 06”. Together with soul-mate Benny Pecoraio, Ralf joined forces and started “4 Ears”. Their first release ‘Can’t Be Without You’ was signed to Canadian deep house label Iwanai Music and hit immediately the Traxsource Top10.

During his career Ralf had the pleasure to compile and mix various CD-Compilations. Including in 2004 “Arrival Vol I” (Double Mix-CD together with Howard Donald (Take That), for which they toured together all over Germany) and “Studio – the finest in lounge and house music”, which was selected as CD of the month in the German “Raveline” magazin in December 2004. In Februar 2005 the first GOGO Music labelcompilation “GO!” including highlights of 3 years label work was released. It was called the best compilation of the year by UK’S TTR magazin. In October 2006 the second part “GO!!” hit the market.

In 2006 Ralf GUM held his first GOGO Music Winter Music Conference event in Miami with great success. With an impressive line-up including e.g. Kenny Dixon Jr aka Moodyman, Theo Parrish, Markus Enochson, Glenn Underground plus the GOGO Music DJs, the party went down in a storm and was one of the most talked about events at the conference. 2007 saw GOGO Music teaming up with Atal Music and Bubble Soul for a joint WMC event at Hotel Victor, called “Yes Please”. Including an likewise great line-up including e.g. Jamie Lewis, Raw Artistic Soul and many others the party was a great success and the kick-off for further “Yes Please” events including the critical acclaimed WMC event in 2008 at Sagamore and the ADE 2008 event at Mansion. More highlights worth to mention is the appearance at MTV’s “Battle of the DJs” in April 2003 and invitations to the You.FM Clubnight (Hessischer Rundfunk Radio and TV, 2 times in 2005, one time in 2006, 2007 and 2009).

In 2008 Ralf GUM unveiled his long awaited debut masterpiece album titled “Uniting Music” on his label GOGO Music. Composing a continuous piece of music, seamless and blended into a luscious texture of soulful-, afro-and latin-house and jazz inspired grooves, Ralf showcased his ability to create wonderful original songs. With each song intertwining with another, he’s pushing the boundaries well beyond the traditional dj mix sense! Almost seeming like one beautiful track the whole album contained it all: really pretty dreamy tracks, some real groovin’ live sounding deals and some late night slices of hypnotic house, too. The album received great plaudit worldwide. For example UK’s M8 Magazine called the CD „simply one of the best albums of the year” and the 3Sat TV show “Kulturzeit” wrote on their web-site that “no single second of the album bores”. “Uniting Music” was released by Rambling Records in Japan and by Soul Candi in South Africa as well.

The hallmark of Ralf’s sound is his love for funky harmonies coupled with wicked underground beats and crisp percussion. But the distinctive groove isn’t the only reason for Ralf’s success – his passion for all things soulful shines through in all he does. This helps him creating a simply irresistible groove every time he emerges from the studio or works the turntables. Due to his successful work in various areas there is no denying that Ralf GUM has established in the top-league of the most prolific dj/producers in the house scene.

LISTEN AGAIN Gavin Peters spoke to DJ Andy Ward on the BANGing House show on wednesday 14th April from 10pm to midnight

Andy Ward Joined Gavin Peters on Wednesday 14th April on the BANGing House show.

andy-ward-article-image

Andy Ward is best known as one of the guys responsible for the worldwide anthem - Strings of Life, the remake he made as Soul Central, alongside Timmy Vegas.

His story starts way before this….

Andy Ward first gained success as a DJ in his home town of Birmingham, UK in the early 90’s. It was his legendary Sunday morning parties at The Marco Polo Bar that gained the support and following of his many friends in the second city, a following which allowed him to take an unprecedented 200+ people on a UK wide tour, playing at the then super clubs such as Cream and Love to Be.

In 1995 he was hailed by Mixmag as one of ten new talents to watch out for , alongside the likes of Tony de Vit, Elliot Eastwick & Gayle San.

His musical style started out as an even blend of early rave anthems, which could have been anything from a Chicago house track to an exctasy-driven hands in the air number. It was this variety in his playing that led Andy to be able to adapt his set at any given time to the crowd in front of him, and this style slowly started to gain him notoriety around the UK.

The next chapter in his career was when he was invited to join Choice FM in Birmingham, and what was fortunate timing in his appointment led him to be given three shows across the weekend on Friday, Saturday & Sunday. Once again Andy used his musical knowledge and tastes to present a diverse spectrum of music to the people of Birmingham and continued to gain more and more listeners. As Choice FM became Galaxy 102.2, Andy was given the prime time slot of a Friday evening and competed with Pete Tong for the lion’s share of the audience in the Midlands.

Various residencies in Birmingham and The Mud Club in London were accompanied by guest appearances at more and more high profile venues, and slowly but surely Andy became a regular headliner around the country at clubs like Back to Basics, Miss Moneypenny’s and his favourite venue outside of Birmingham, Garage City. It was this connection with Garage City and his faultless performances there that led Andy to become resident DJ for what he now describes as one of the best parties in the world. Since its conception Andy has played and continues to play alongside the world’s most respected DJs for Soul Heaven, which enjoyed over 6 years at The Ministry of Sound. He has also played the legendary Southport Weekender, warming up for the Masters at Work. When Soul heaven launched their Sunday night party in Ibiza in 08, Louie Vega specifically requested Andy to open up for him, another indication of the respect and commitment to quality he possesses.

Whilst maintaining the credibility of the deep house fraternity, Andy also has a strong following in many countries around the world, thanks to his dedication to observing a crowd and giving them exactly what they want. As times and music tastes change, Andy has adapted his sets to incorporate the latest sounds whilst maintaining his trademark “groove”. Never afraid to play an anthem when needed, always willing to break the latest deep house track on an unsuspecting crowd, Andy continues to win new territories over with his faultless sets - put him in front of a big room and he will rock it.

Not only has he conquered the DJ booth, he also enjoys phenomenal success as one half of chart topping duo Soul Central, alongside his long time studio partner Timmy Vegas. In 2005 Soul Central stormed the UK charts at an impressive debut number 6, with their worldwide smash “Strings of Life”. Once again, Andy found himself step up a notch in his career, becoming a world class producer has enabled him to cover all continents, with several worldwide tours under his belt. Continuing to release both club anthems and underground classics, Andy enjoys a healthy remix and release schedule, not only as Soul Central but with his own productions and collaborations with other artists.

Andy presents the Vocal Booth Club Sessions on SSradiouk.com, as well as the Soul Heaven Radio show (syndicated stations worldwide) with thousands subscribing to his weekly podcasts. His world famous Vocal Booth parties are now into their tenth year and continue to bring the best music week in, week out to the masses.

Andy says “I consider myself to be a party DJ. I’ve been back to back with the best in the business, warmed up at the biggest events in the world and can go as deep as anyone. Saying that, I’m at my happiest playing tunes that make people go crazy. Whether that’s playing something from the heart at Soul Heaven or banging it out in front of 2000 people with Tim, as Soul Central. I’m in the fortunate position to be able to play music i want to dance to all night, and there’s nothing better than doing it week in week out with like minded folk. Sounds corny, but it’s the truth !”

So listen again to Andy Ward in the mix on the Gavin Peters BANGing House show which aired on Wednesday 14th April between 10pm and midnight.
