Listen Again as D-Nyce speaks to Singer, Songwriter Jesse Boykins III….
With each generation a new style of music emerges. While the new generation celebrates its divergence from the generation before in the shaping of its own musical identity, the older generation tends to discredit the ability of the new sound to qualify as real music. Singer, Songwriter Jesse Boykins III has found a way to reconcile these differences. His music possesses a jazzy and soulful sound reminiscent of early R&B acts, but his production and writing are undeniably relevant today Jesse was born in Chicago, moved to Jamaica at the age of 5 and four years later would spend the rest of his youth growing up in Miami.
Jesse’s career in music began at the age of 9 when he joined his school choir. He soon began auditioning around Miami and found himself recording with various local Miami artists. His first EP, Dopamine: My Life On My Back EP was released February 14, 2008 and his follow up The Beauty Created LP was released November 25, 2008 through NomaDic MuSic, a partnership between him and long time friend and New York Giants wide receiver Sinorice Moss. . Joe Lewis Thomas (born July 5, 1972), usually credited simply as Joe, is a seven-time Grammy Award-nominated American R&B singer and record producer.
Joe’s extensive background in gospel music has allowed him to produce his albums as well as sing on them. Influenced early on by gospel stars like The Winans, Commissioned, and Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Joe grew to love soul legends Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye plus contemporary stars Bobby Brown and Keith Sweat.
While working in a gospel music store and singing in a church, Joe met producer Vincent Herbert and recorded a three-track demo. Joe released his debut album, Everything, in 1993. It spawned a number of hit singles, including the #10 R&B hit “I’m in Luv.” Joe signed with Jive Records for his 1997 album, All That I Am, which reached No. 13 on the Billboard 200 album charts and No. 4 on the R&B charts. All That I Am eventually went on to sell over a million copies in the U.S.
After recording for a staggering 11 years on Jive Records, Joe discovered a pattern of stalled promotions and adjusted radio play all linking to one man, R. Kelly. In 2007-2008, Joe left Jive Records and claimed that R. Kelly had been sabotaging his career while they were labelmates: “R. Kelly was very instrumental in making a lot of decisions when it came to my records being played on the radio.” “He would make a call to the radio station or to the label and say, ‘Hey, this Joe record is too hot right now. Y’all need to pull that back.’ And they would oblige.”Eventually, Joe signed with Kedar Massenburg’s Kedar Entertainment, and has released two albums on the label: September 2008’s Joe Thomas, New Man and July 2009’s Signature.
Quote:
“I feel like if you have a queen, you should treat her like a queen. I feel she doesn’t deserve anything less than that. If you make a promise for forever, you should keep it and hold up to it.” — Joe.

Catch him this Monday 21st September in conversation with D’nyce! Singer Songwriter Yomi is the latest addition to the UK Soul/Rnb scene and is set to make waves with his debut EP ‘From Me to You’.
Music and singing came naturally to him while growing up in Lagos, Nigeria. Listening to bands like Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang, The Commodores and Lakeside were his early childhood memories. His influences ranging from Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson to Prince in later years shaped his sense of ability and performance.
Yomi teamed up with UK Soul Producer Ray Hayden (Incognito, Brand New Heavies, Swing Out Sister) in 2008 to record a 4 track EP, which he wrote for an studio album some years back.
‘From Me to You’ is Yomi’s dedication to the figures and fortune that influenced him to this point and his personal salute to his family and friends who supported him along the way.
The tracks are solidly soulful and raw in energy and will give the UK RnB Soul scene something to rave about in the coming months and years.
Yomi’s singing style and tone is like no other but yet he seems to draw comparisons to the likes of Maxwell, D’Angelo and Seal to name a few.
Indeed these are descriptions that can only serve him well in making a name for himself on the UK Soul circuit.
So don’t forget to tune in from 7pm on Monday 21st September for Soul-D-Out Mondays with D’nyce for an exclusive insight into Yomi’s musical world. Send your questions to studio@bangradio.fm or text the word BANG followed by your message to 63333.
