LISTEN AGAIN - Sherry Dixon talks IDENTITY with Dr. Robert Beckford Sunday 15th August

August 13, 2010 by Cassandra
Filed under Features, Listen Again, Sherry Dixon

Don’t miss The Sherry Dixon Show this Sunday 12-3pm when Sherry will be discussing identity.

How do we, as black people, define ourselves in the 21st century? Do we define ourselves as ‘British’ if we reside on this rainy island? Are we defined by our ethnic origins or even by what we do as a profession?
When certain parts of society have opinions as to what is ‘black enough’ and what is considered ‘appropriate’ whether it be with regards to appearance or social circles, it raises a question about who makes the rules in the first place.
Join Sherry as she talks with Dr. Robert Beckford and Paul Obinna about identity about the ‘Black in the Union Jack’ this Sunday.

About Dr. Robert Beckford

robert-beckford-1Dr Robert Beckford is an educator, author and award-winning broadcaster. An educator for most of his life, he first taught adult literacy at Bournville College in Birmingham in the early 1990s and progressed to become the first ever tutor in Black Theology at Queens College, Birmingham (1992-8) where he taught trainee priests and ministers for the Anglican and Methodist churches.

He began teaching at the University of Birmingham in 1999, working first as a Research Fellow with black offenders at Birmingham Prison and then moving to the faculty as the first Lecturer in Black Theology in 2001. He spent two years as the Reader in Black Theology and Popular Culture at Oxford Brookes University. He is currently a visiting Professor of Sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Robert is the author of five academic texts in the field of religion, culture and politics, including a study of Rastafari and Pentecostalism (Dread and Pentecostal 2002), Gang Culture in Birmingham (God and the Gangs 2004) and a Theology of Reggae-Dub (Jesus Dub 2006). His current research explores the role of documentary film as resistance to the bewitchment of black British Christianity by a-politicism and anti intellectualism (Documentary as Exorcism, Continuum 2010).

A firm believer in teaching for social change, Robert has retained a commitment to teaching outside of traditional contexts. An extension of his organic approach to intellectual matters led him into broadcasting in 1999.

Robert has presented a plethora of documentaries on radio and television and made his debut in the Trevor Phillip’s series, Britain’s Slave Past. He quickly moved on to work on number of programmes with BBC 4 including Ebony Towers (2001). Robert presented his first mainstream feature length documentary in 2002 for BBC 2 on the story of Jamaican Independence (Blood and Fire) and earned a BAFTA for diversity in educational broadcasting for a six part series for BBC Religion (Test of Time 2002). He began working with Channel 4 in 2003 and struck up a dynamic partnership with the then commissioning editor, Aaqil Ahmed.

rb1rb2To date Robert has averaged an impressive two films per year with Channel 4, becoming a regular fixture on the prime time television slots of Christmas Day and Easter Sunday. He even found time to present a weekly BBC West Midlands Radio Show in Birmingham 2006/7. As one of the most prolific black documentary presenters in Britain, his credits include God is Black (2004), Empire Pays Back (2005), The Secret Family of Jesus (2006), The Great Africa Scandal (2007), The Secrets of the 12 Disciples (2008) Decoding the Nativity (2008)and The Dark Ages and the emergence of an English Inclusivity (2009). His films for channel 4 have earned him a ‘controversial’ label which he interprets as, ‘a cultural field that can only locate black men as athletes, entertainers or problematic.’

Secure with his modest success, Robert has worked to develop talent within the African and African Caribbean community, including Andy Akinwolere (Blue Peter)and Jazz artist Soweto Kinch. Robert is currently turning his hand to TV drama and is currently collaborating with playwright and actor, Kwame Kwe-Armah on a gritty but redemptive urban series.

LISTEN AGAIN - Sherry discusses WOMEN dating younger MEN this Sunday 12-3pm

August 7, 2010 by Cassandra
Filed under Don't Miss, Features, Listen Again, Sherry Dixon

Don’t miss The Sherry Dixon Show this week when Sherry will be discussing WOMEN dating younger MEN on BANG 103.6FM

The definition of a Cougar….

“A woman in her sexual prime who prefers to hunt rather than be hunted. A cougar’s victims are usually younger than she is….”

The obstacles that were once present in the dating game have been slowly, but surely shifting over the years. Gone are the days when you’d assume that a woman walking hand in hand with a man considerably younger was simply a mother displaying a close relationship with her grown up son! Although men have been doing it for years, supposedly ‘upgrading’ to a younger model, the playing field has been showing signs of levelling in the favour of women. So what’s changed? Can this be seen as a way for a woman to validate her sex appeal? Is it about power? Are we witnessing the dawning of the ‘Cougar’ age…

Make sure you’re tuned in this Sunday as Sherry discusses the matter with relationship expert Des OConnor.
Also, Shevelle Rhule talks all about what’s hot and what’s not in beauty and fashion.

About Des OConnor

des-oconnor-mainDes OConnor is a qualified certified Dating and Life Coach who specialises in providing Single Black Women with tools and resources to improve every area of their lives, which will then benefit them in finding and attracting the right Black Man for them.

Des OConnor’s first Dating and Life Coaching workshop for Single Black Women was in August 2009 where 45 women attended. Then in September 2009 another Workshop attracted another 65 and on 5 December 2009 85 women attended! Des’s innovative all-male question panel was a great hit, with the women being able to ask the men anything they wished. This was quite a revelation for the women . . . and the men . . . AND DES!.

In January and February 2010 Des held three dating / life coaching seminars called “Connecting Black People Together Forever” which brought over 250 single women to meet with over 200 good single black men. All three events were such a huge success that three TV shows recorded it. You can see these videos on Des’s website.

LISTEN AGAIN - Rhoda Wilson joins Sherry Dixon - Sunday August 1st

Don’t miss The Sherry Dixon Show this Sunday 12-3pm when Sherry will be joined by Rhoda Wilson.
Sherry will also be discussing the topic: How many lovers is ‘too many’…?

Society’s attitudes towards casual relationships have changed in the past few years.
Programmes such as ‘Sex and the City’ have enjoyed phenomenal success, showing that woman should no longer have to feel embarrassed or even ashamed to ask for what they really want. But how many lovers is ‘too many’? Fans of the show will be familiar with the character Samantha Jones, a forty-something blonde bombshell in PR who works hard and ‘plays’ even harder! Known for her numerous sexual encounters, she was once unable to recall all the partners she had been with when quizzed.
Although it can be said that supposed promiscuity is now considered ‘the norm’, there will always be a double standard as far as men and women are concerned. The number of lovers that makes a man a ’stud’ can have a woman labelled as something else entirely. A woman’s actions in these circumstances will often be questioned. Has she low self esteem? Is she hoping that it will bring love? Perhaps even more shockingly, she just wants to have a good time. Are we ready to fully accept this? Tune in and have your say!
