Check out BANG FM at the Notting Hill Carnival

What can I tell you about Carnival 2010? Well it went a bit like this… As we approached the carnival, we could hear the heavy bass lines from the music creeping up on us. Some of the street teamers started skankin out and getting live! We all made it to The Tabernacle, which was where BANG FM were based and met with one of the street team coordinators, Remel. She gave us the brief for the day and after that we headed out on to the busy streets of West London.  We gave out badges and flyers to everyone we saw as we passed through carnival.  After some hard skankin, I mean work, we headed back to our base to refuel on some delicious BBQ burger’s with spicy rice and salad- you know how we do keep it healthy!

Throughout the day, we got to see some famous people including KANO, DONAEO & GAPPY RANKS, but we didn’t get to take any pix with them. BANG were broadcasting live from the carnival over the two days, some of the presenters who came along to bring the carnival vibes to the airwaves included Lynnike & Sefa, Blaze, Vyper G, Jarren C, Zyleen, Sherryl Blue, Donatella,  Jay Jones & King Caztro. We had some special guests passing through including Meleka, Mz Bratt, Eddie Kadi and more. We had a heavy time and showed everyone there just how BANG get down.

Lynnike & Sefa chat to Jamal Edwards, the genius behind SB:TV on Thursday’s show

treyyyfinal

This week Thursday, Lynnike & Sefa are going to be in conversation with Jamal Edwards, the man behind SB:TV. We have all seen the videos, we have all heard the name, so it’s only right we get to know the brains behind the enterprise.

Luton born and west London bred, Jamal Edwards, 19, is the man behind online production enterprise SB.TV, renowned and respected for providing the grime scene with a visual platform, broadcasting from pockets of the UK too often ignored. Having now amassed a following of over 15,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel and 11 million views, SB.TV is a brand firming itself in mainstream vernacular. Edwards is clearly glad he gave up MCing to stand behind the camera then. Heavily influenced by music growing up, most notably by his mother, Brenda Edwards (a passionate singer who rose to prominence as a finalist on The X Factor), it was inevitable Edwards would go into a creative career.

During secondary school he’d become solidly involved in grime music, taking on the alias Smokey Barz and experiencing notable underground success as an MC. However after a dizzying number of work placements from Bid Up TV to Cambridge Theatre to ITV – and still only 16 – Jamal changed tack and founded SB.TV. From first uploading videos of friends rapping for fun he noticed a serious lack of online representation for grime music. Music heads wanted easily accessible and relatable visuals, which at the time was sorely lacking. Almost four years later and what has SB.TV achieved? Views are in the millions, he’s uploaded over 300 videos and counting and has a partnership with internet giants YouTube. Alongside such a sparkling track record Edward’s has gone onto bigger projects including the creation of the video diary series for chart topper Tinchy Stryder, working closely alongside grime’s pioneer DJ, Kiss 100’s Logan Sama and most recently creating a massive buzz with his now trademark F64 videos showcasing the cream of not only UK talent but overseas heavyweights such as Talib Kweli. SB.TV encompasses videos that champion everyone from the up and coming to established UK talent from, Wiley, Chipmunk & Tinchy Stryder to Kano, D Double E & Dizzee Rascal; and it’s fair to say since its birth has had an undeniably meteoric rise. With such an astonishing work rate, rapid progression as a videographer; including a coveted position as Assistant Producer on BBC3 project Jail Tales, working as a researcher for Tiger Aspects and international plans in the pipeline, SB.TV can only go from strength to strength.

Tune in from 6pm on Thursday to hear our exclusive interview with Jamal.

LISTEN AGAIN: Catch Baby Blue on Drivetime with Lynnike and Sefa - 4-7pm

June 30, 2010 by Cassandra
Filed under Features, Listen Again, Lynnike & Sefa

baby-blue-2-mainBaby Blue is a young artist with a difference. She is not looking for instant glorification or hoping to be relevant just for today, but rather has an aim to sustain longevity.

Blue, as she is affectionately known, started rapping while at school, when friends decided to form a group and needed a female voice. Although she originally wanted to become an actress, being a part of the group inspired her to start writing songs. After being invited to record at Raw Materials studio, Blue recorded a solo track called ‘I Woulda’, which was inspired by her cousin’s gang-related death in the US. The track was given to various DJs and received a great amount of support and airplay.

At the age of 19 she sent her music to successful fellow UK artist Estelle, who immediately invited Blue to New York to record the song ‘Hey Girl’ featuring John Legend, as well as another track for Estelle’s debut album ‘The 18th Day,’ and featured in the video for the hit ‘1980.’ Later that year, Blue released the mixtape ‘Out of the Blue Vol I’ (with Volume II released two years later) which featured Estelle, members of So Solid Crew, Shystie, Sway, and Akala, who were all respected underground artists. Her first solo music video was for the single ‘Sometimes,’ which was released to push Vol II of the mixtape.

Baby Blue, whose name came about because she would sport everything from clothing to contact lenses in the colour baby blue, has a sound that fuses Hip-hop with Grime, R&B and Pop, which creates an international sound for all markets. She intends to create amazing music that stands the test of time worldwide.

The highlight of Blue’s career to date has been working with British legends Madness on their comeback single ‘Sorry’ in 2007, also featuring Sway. Once again she proved to be the special female element needed to make the song a success.

In order to arm herself with the necessary tools needed to survive in the industry, Blue moved to New York City for a year, to learn the business side of music. There, she networked with industry professionals and built up her own work ethic. Part of her learning process saw her tour with Estelle for four months, travelling around the US and Europe to gain further knowledge as well as honing her skills as a songwriter.

Having previously worked with others, such as Ms Dynamite, Kardinal Offishall, and Idris Elba, 2010 will be Blue’s time to shine on her own, with an album slated for release, showcasing an innovative and unique sound. As someone who is described as down-to-earth, and a future entrepreneur who is passionate about music, Baby Blue hopes to make her mark further by collaborating with giants of music - Jay-Z, Nas and the legendary Stevie Wonder. Watch this space!

Lynnike & Sefa chat to Trey Songz.. Listen back

trey-songz1

So we got to catch up with man of the moment, Trey Songz on our show on Tuesday. It was kind of emotional (hearts were pounding, armpits became sticky…lol). This guy has every woman in the world screaming and dribbling at the mere mention of his name, so getting to talk with him again (we interviewed him for the 1st time a couple of years ago) was an absolute honour!

Whilst trying to remain calm, we quizzed him about errrrrthang, from his upcoming tour in the States with Monica to who he would love to work with. We even managed to squeeze in a couple of questions about his ideal woman. Obviously he said LYNNIKE & SEFA, but to make it fair, we said he couldn’t mention our names. He told us whether he likes thick or slim, real hair or weave, Beyonce or Alicia Keys, brains or beauty etc.

This guy is more than aware of the power he possesses to make grown women act like damn fools because he had us like putty in his hands. He revealed he would be happy for us to share him so we can each get some Trey loving. And who are we to turn down this offer??? That would just be plain ruuuuuuuuuuuuude!! ;)

Check it out if you didn’t catch it!!
