18 year old Shawalin wows judges at Drop In’s Talent Competition

On Wednesday 2nd December, Drop In’s talent competition took place at our training centre in The New Bridge Park Complex in Brent. Drop In is a service offered by BANG to 13-19 year olds from Brent, who are passionate about music and wish to use our music production and recording facilities. There are many extremely talented artists from the local area who come and use the music studio each week. We thought it only right to hold a talent contest to see who really had the skills on the mic and could be crowned Drop In’s Microphone Champion!

On the night each contestant was judged by and given feedback from a professional judging panel consisting of:

Incisive (A very talented rapper who has himself been playlisted on BANG 103.6)

Maz (presenter of the Sunday morning gospel show),

King Caztro (presenter of the piping hot show, Friday Spark)

AJ “Blaze” King (presenter of Saturday morning’s Breakfast Banquet),

These judges undeniably gave the X-Factor judges a run for their money, with their on point, constructive feedback. Not only do they look the part, these guys know their stuff too!

The evening was a huge success, with a fantastic turn out. Our host for the night was Raven, who did a wonderful job (she will soon be putting Dermot O’Leary out of a job). We were delighted when Incisive performed his street banger ‘Release’ and had the all of the audience singing along to the chorus.

The winner of Drop In’s talent competition was Shawalin, an 18 year old lyrical genius from Brent. He had the judges  left in stitches when he performed his fun track, Primark Gwop. They were not only impressed by his wit, but also his delivery, lyrical content and his confidence. He will not only have his track playlisted on the radio station for one week, but will also feature on the drivetime show with Lynnike & Sefa on Tuesday 8th December. Make sure you check it out and hear what all the fuss is about.

Talent Competition winner, Shawalin joins Lynnike & Sefa on Drivetime

The winner of Drop In’s Talent Competition, Shawalin will be joining your crazy girls this Tuesday (8th December). We are going to find out all there is to know about this talented 18 year old rapper/ singer who wowed judges in a recent talent contest.

shawa2Born and raised in North-West London, George “Shawalin” Mpanga gained an early interest in music at home, where he was exposed to sounds ranging from Bob Marley to Kool & The Gang. Having developed a passion for performing at a young age, his first memorable success was at a talent competition in 2001, where on holiday in France with his primary school he performed Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me” and won. Gaining recognition as a talented singer, the young teen participated in Brent Summer University in 2004, during which he built on song-writing and performing skills. The praise he received for his song-writing not only fuelled his already burning passion for music, but also directed his attention towards rapping.

Fast forward a few years to 2009 and in August Shawalin released of his first mixtape, “Memory Bank”, titled in reference to his technique of constructing lyrics entirely in his head, a skill initiated by co-artist Dispikable. With songs such as “Primark Gwop” and “Dedicated [To Sam’s Chicken]”, the CD shows a much more mellow side to the rapper His killer combination of creativity and lyricism makes the young MC a promising talent for 2010.

Want to find out more about Shawalin and hear him freestyle? Then tune into drivetime this Tuesday from 4-7pm with Lynnike & Sefa. If you have any questions for Shawa, send them to: studio@bangradio.fm
