Don’t miss D-Nyce talking to Teena Marie this Thursday on BANG 103.6FM

teena-marie-marie

Teena Marie nicknamed Lady T, was a protégé of late funk legend Rick James, and is notable as one of the few successful white performers of R&B. She sings R&B with strong, robust vocals, plays rhythm guitar, keyboards and congas. She is of Portuguese, Irish, Italian, and Native American ancestry born in Santa Monica in 1950 Teena was always destined for the stage.
Teena signed with Motown Records in 1976, having gained an introduction to staff producer Hal Davis (best known for his work with the Jackson 5) and then auditioned, with her then band, for label boss Berry Gordy, but was then spotted by Rick James, who effectively Teena her first top-ten R&B hit, “I’m Just a Sucker for Your Love” (#8 Black Singles Chart), which was a duet with James. Neither the album sleeve nor other packaging showed a picture of Teena, apparently on the theory that black audiences might be reluctant to buy an album by a white artist. In fact, many radio programmers wrongly assumed Teena was African American during the earliest months of her career. This myth was dispelled when, in 1980, her sophomore album, Lady T, sported a picture of her on the cover.

From Motown to Epic to her indie label Sarai , a 14 year hiatus, hip hop label Cash Money Records and her current home Stax Records/Concord Music label, Teena has described her current 13th album ‘Congo Square’ as “personal and spiritual” and indicated that it is more jazz-influenced than most of her previous work, Congo Square was released on June 9, 2009 on the Stax Records/Concord Music label.. Join Tina Marie & D’nyce in conversation on Thursday 11th Feb 2010 where she talks about her life, Rick James and current offering ‘ Congo Square’

Don’t miss Kasha on Soul-D-Out Thursday 7pm-9pm on BANG 103.6FM

kasha-1-mainIn 2009 UK inspirational rapper Kasha launched his debut album called ‘The Oracle’. Kasha’s style has been described as raw, emotional, and poetic over an eclectic mix of street styles, subtle left field tones and classy retro soul tracks, his style is fierce with the intensity of Tupac but with all the sparkle of Frank Sinatra.’ The Oracle’ opens up a cool conscious sound to a new generation of ears and cultures looking for wisdom, revelation and sweet laidback vibes. Kasha also has the ability to blend 80’s and 90’s soulful classics with his smooth flow. His recent cover of Jay-Z’s Empire State of Mind has been described as ‘amazing’, ‘inspirational’, ‘sophisticated’ and ‘mature’. Kasha’s music tells serious stories of his surroundings, the problems in the world and his dreams but all thrown together in a charming, interesting and often crazy way. Kasha’s Hip Hop is curiously very melody driven and often finds itself throwing out the rule book. This is international Hip Hop but with all the diverse magic of the independent UK sound. Kasha has many projects in the pipeline; the 2nd Album will becoming this year, his Retro Love Mixtape will be out Q1 2010, his Black Rhyme music video is dropping this month, along with him starring in two forthcoming films.
Kasha is a natural born performer who lives and breathes music, give Kasha a crowd and he will give you a show. Join me d’nyce on Soul-D-Out Thursday 4th Feb 2010 where I chat with a rising UK star Kasha on bang 103.6 FM
