About Wil Johnson

wil-johnson
Wil Johnson swapped the running shoes of a promising young athlete for a successful career as a professional actor. He quickly made a name for himself on television with performances in ‘Casualty’, ‘Baby Father’, ‘Clocking Off’ and ‘Buried Treasure’. As well as playing Spencer in the award winning drama series, ‘Waking the Dead’.

On the large screen Wil has made his presence felt in films such as ‘Yes!’ Directed by the award winning director Sally Potter, ‘Adulthood’, ‘South West 9’ and the controversial indie feature ‘Emotional Backgammon’. He also played the lead in the Royal Lyceum Theatre Company’s Othello.

Disoriented Generation (Premieres 3rd April 2010 Rio Cinema in Dalston, London)

‘Disoriented Generation’ written and directed by Ogbervire Christian Ashaiku is a brand new, enthralling Comedy/Drama which follows the journey of Ishmael (played by Wil Johnson) a young Nigerian man living in London, as he tries to keep his life on the rails of the emotional rollercoaster we call love. The film spanning 5 years of Ishmaels life, follows his attempts to navigate through three very different, life changing relationships in his quest to find happiness and peace.

Disoriented Generation is a far cry from the street-based films of recent years that have offered representations of the black British experience. Tired of that continued trend of ghetto-based flicks, Johnson and Ashaiku put their hands in their own pockets to finance a film that would tell a different story.

Platform2 is a global volunteering scheme for 18 to 25 year olds who wouldn’t otherwise be able to visit a developing country and get involved with global issues of justice and poverty. It is funded by UKaid from the Department for International Development. and run by Christian Aid and BUNAC.

platfrom2-picture

If you are between 18 and 25, have (or are eligible to have) a UK passport and are resident in the UK, apply today and you could be volunteering in India, Nepal, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa or Peru. If you’re accepted on to the programme, you will have a training day before your trip overseas; 10 weeks volunteering in one of the countries above with a team of other volunteers; then a three day residential on your return. This will include workshops and opportunities for you to figure out how you want to express your experience.
You’ll find lots of info to help you in our programme overview.

Read about our volunteers’ experiences and have a look at our about section where some frequently asked questions are answered.

“Over there everybody was connected and out to help each other get by. They were all in the same boat. Here, everyone is trying to get into their own boat and sail their own course. Over there they know that if they don’t build a big boat together, they’re not going nowhere. The people of Bledi Chedi showed me what the true essence of community is and I think that people could do with connecting to that – that sense of common unity.”
Shaun Welch, a welder and artist from Birmingham, spent 10 weeks working in the Volta region of north-east Ghana.

“The people were so amazing – so warm, so welcoming. That’s why so many of us want to go back… They talk so highly of all the things we’ve done for them. We think it was nothing, but they think it’s amazing that we took time out to do something for them.”
Muna Sheikh, a law student form east London, spent 10 weeks working in a community in Ventanilla, Peru.

“I didn’t think that people like me could do something like this. I thought it was just for people who were rich… I’d never been on an airplane before. The farthest I’d been was Wales.”
Charlotte Singleton, a volunteer youth worker from Manchester, spent 10 weeks teaching in a school in Himachal Pradesh, northern India.

D’Nyce chats with Shea Soul on this Thursday’s Soul-D-Out

Don’t miss D’Nyce in conversation with Shea Soul on Soul-D-Out this Thursday 7pm-9 on BANG 103.6FM

shea-soul-mainSinging has always been Shea’s first love. It was something that came naturally to her, but not having come from a musical background she spent most of her childhood believing that the idea of being a singer was nothing but a fantasy. However driven by passion, and determined to have a career in what she loved, she decided to pursue her dream, and left regular education to study at the acclaimed BRIT school in Croydon. Here she managed to develop her passion and writing skills. At 16 she was placed in a girl group called ‘Che’. The foursome where trained and moulded but Shea decided it wasn’t for her. Sick of being told what to sing and how to sing, what to wear and what not to wear, she decided to go it alone. It was tough but gave her time to truly discover herself as an artist. Having worked with MJ Cole as well as guesting on shows and doing PA’s Shea decided that she needed to discover herself as a person, not just an artist and took a break at what could have been a crucial times for her. She packed her rucksack and decided to travel the world and in doing so she got to sing with amazing musicians all over the world. She returned refreshed a little wiser and with more creativity and confidence than ever.
